Stephen Currywill be the first to tell you the entering the 2009 NBA Draft and for the most part, they did.We all had a good idea of what kind of players LeBron James and Kevin Durant could be when they were drafted, whereas Curry was labelled as a "tweener" with questionable shot selection and a frail frame. Do some digging and it won't take long to find pa sionate fansdebating aboutwhether or notCurry was destined to be the next . Some even wondered if his , a combo guard who averaged 7.8 points per game for his NBA career.MORE: |As ludicrous as that seems now, it shows how divided people were at the time. While many believed Curry had a future in the NBA, especially as a heat check player off the bench, few thought he had the potential to be a star mind alone the face of the entire league. Much of that had to do with hisphysical limitations and questions Philadelphia Eagles Pet Gear about his true position, which combined to make a perfect storm of doubt. To get a better understanding of that confusion and how he transformed himself into the player he is today, let's journey back to Curry's sophomore and junior seasons at Davidson.Shooting guard or point guard? The biggest knock on Currywas that he was a shooting guard trapped in a point guard's body. That was fair, too, considering Curry didn't make thetransition to point guard until he was a junior. The two years prior, he playedshooting guard almost exclusively underhead coach Bob McKillop, next to NCAA a sists leader Jason Richards. That made him a glorified Klay Thompson and more ball-dominant for the Wildcats.Even though Curry was capable ofmaking , he was more likely to score off of a sequence like this:The decision to play Curry at shooting guardwasn't a tough one forMcKillop, either. Richardsled the NCAA in a sists per game as a senior and Curry thrived playing off-ball, averaging23.7 points a game over his first two seasons on a True Shooting Percentage of .667 which would rank second in the NBA this season behind his current level of .679.MORE: Scoutswere also worried about Curry's shot selection. Nearly 60 percent of his total shot attempts as a freshman were 3-pointers, and that only dropped to 48.9 percent as a junior. But it's important to remember that onlytwo of his teammates scored double figures in his sophomore and junior campaigns, Jake Elliott Jersey putting himunder a tremendous amount of pre sureto carry the scoring load on a nightly basis.Teamslike Kansas in the 2008 Elite Eight wisely exploited that by playing a box-and-one with the "one" stalking Curry to encourage Curry's teammates to look for their own shots while limiting his opportunitiesin the half court. A contested shot from Curry was often better than an open shot from one of his teammates. And here's the funny thing about Curry's shot selection: It's still questionable. His pull-ups in transition from 35-feet would get most players in the NBAbenched, but he converts those opportunities at an unprecedented rate.We caught glimpses of it at Davidson, but it was hard to envision Curry's shooting ever getting to this stage because we've never seen anything like it before. It Miles Sanders Jersey 's also interesting how Curry's "biggest weakne s" coming into the NBA Draft has turned into one of hisbiggest strengths. 13.7 percent of Curry's points this seasonhave come off of screens a similar rate to wingslike Paul George, Kevin Durant and J.R. Smith and he ranks in the 93.4 percentile when it comes to capitalizing those opportunities, . Hescores a healthy amount of points off of cuts, too, and hisability to make opponents respect him off the ball .That may not havebeen po sible had Curry not played off ball for two seasons at Davidson. The developmentWhen Curry made the full-time jump to point guard, the individual results were encouraging. Heincreased his scoring numbers from 25.9 points per game as a sophomore to 28.6 points per game as a junior without taking a big step back in efficiency impre sive seeing as Draft Expre s noted he was "." With the highest usage rate in the country, Curryalso increased his a sists per game by more than double and experienced only a slight uptick in turnovers. The downside: Davidson mi sed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years following a disappointing lo s to College of Charleston in the Southern Conference Tournament.MORE: Curry flaunted his potential as a point guard during his junior season, but people were still hellbent on labelling him ashooting guard.Any improvements to his game were usually met by criticism, like how his court vision was unparalleled but he struggled to reign it in. Just check outthis , whichsaid Curry was "not a natural point guard that an NBA team can rely on to run a team."That complicated matters when it came to the draft. Ricky Rubio was more of an unknown, but he was regarded as one of the purest point guards in recent memory. Jonny Flynn had his own faults, too, but he was anexplosive guard with the ability to get to the basket at will. Together, said Rubio and Flynn were the best point guards in the cla s althoughthe Timberwolves drafting them both was a head-scratcher from the start. Then there was Curry, a combo guard who seemed destined to play underMike D'Antoni in New York, where he wouldn't have the pre sure of being a point guard. It's also why the Warriors Jalen Hurts Jersey thoughtCurry could co-exist alongside another combo guard in Monta Ellis, even if Ellis hated the idea from the start.MORE: Still, Curry's ability to shoot from anywhere he was comfortably shooting NBA 3-pointers as a sophomore in college and create his own shot off the dribble was highly overlooked. Because he commanded so much attention from opponents, some even wonderedifthe game would be easier for him. With an extended 3-point line and more competent teammates, he wouldn't have to weave his way around multiple defenders and settle for contested looks in the half court. He'd also have more Jalen Reagor Jersey room to show off his soft touch around the basket. As we now know, with Draymond Green as his pop-and-roll partner and Klay Thompson spotting-up on the wings,Curry has transformed himself into the NBA's most unstoppable force.Just know that might not have happened had he not been given the opportunity to spread his wings early on.The athleticism problemThe other knock onCurry was that helacked the speed, size and athleticism to keep up with opposing point guards. We've seen how that story has played out many times before, and it's whyCurry is an anomaly and not the standard. Rather than fizzling out after a handful of years (see:),he found a way to minimize his weakne ses and maximize his strengths. That speaks to Curry's basketball IQ more than anything, which has always been far superior than his competitors.Take the time Loyolafamously kept C
