The biggest story of the summer for the Spurs was the addition of LaMarcus Aldridge. The second-biggest story of the summer was the hypothetical ways in which his addition would change the way the Spurs play offense. One game is a ludicrously small sample size to draw meaningful conclusions from, but their 112-106 opening night lo s to the Thunder hinted at thechanges in store for this season. With 6:20 left in the Hank Aaron Jersey first quarter Wednesday, shooting guardDanny Green pitched . Aldridge proceeded to take three dribbles and roughly five seconds to back Kevin Durant into the lane. An up-and-under move got Durant in the air, and Aldridge stepped through for the easy layup. In the 5seconds he had the ball, none of Aldridge'steammates moved (other than Kawhi Leonard finishing clearing out to the weak-side corner). It was a fairly unfamiliar look for San Antonio's offense.MORE: | The Spurs of recent years have been a perpetual motion machine players and the ball are constantly flying from side to side, more concerned with finding an open shot than one for a specific player in a specific location. The a sumption has been that this would need to change somewhat this season, both to accommodate Aldridge and rising star Leonard.San Antonio's motion machine was about leveraging the collective talents of the roster as the individual scoring abilities of Tony Parker, Tim Duncan andManu Ginobili ebbed away. Aldridge and Leonardare the kind of individual offensive engines the Spurs haven't had since theBig Three were in their primes.Obviously, the Spurs wouldn't be looking to completely abandon the masterpiece they've a sembled, but Aldridge and more opportunities for Leonard will require some accommodation from the machine. Against the Thunder, we sawsome of those Freddie Freeman Jersey accomodations le s effective ball movement, fewer open 3-pointers, more isolations and it wasn't always pretty.According the , 55.3 percent of San Antonio's half-court offensive po se sions against the Thunder were created by the player who used the po se sion either a post-up, isolation,or by the ball-handler in a pick-and-roll. Last season, the Cavaliers were the in this regard with 46.3 percent of their po se sions being created. Last season the Spurs were at 35.0 percent, the seventh-lowest in the league. As far as the actions used to create shots, this was somewhat unfamiliar territory.San Antonio certainly moved the ball against Will Smith Jersey Oklahoma City. The Spurs totaled , a slight tick under their per-game average of 345.9 last season. However, they produced about seven fewer a sist chances than they averaged per game last season. Their 39 a sist chances against the Thunder matches up perfectly with last season's iso-heavy offense of the Raptors, who finished last in this category. The other big noticeable difference was with regardto outside shooting. Last seasonthe Spursaveraged . They managed just 10 against the Thunder, Adam Duval Jersey which would have ranked last in the league last season behind the Timberwolves.MORE: | The Spurs wereplaying against a very good defense in Oklahoma City, and we're talking about a sample that is exactly 48 minutes long. It would be inappropriate to mark all of these statistics as a product of i sues with fit and execution. Every team looks different on any given night.Still, the numbers provide circumstantial evidence of an offense that has a lot of work to do. TheSpurs managed an offensive efficiency of 101.2 points per 100 po se sions and some of their struggles were camoflaged by Leonard's fiery performance(32 points on 13-of-22 shooting). Aldridge looked out of sorts and finished with 11 points on 4-of-12 from the field.San Antonio has all the pieces for a fantastic offenseand a track record Phil Niekro Jersey of creative thinking and reinvention. It's hard to imagine the Spurs will continue to look as disjointed as they did in the first game of the season. But it will take more than just time for things to sort themselves out.The Spurs need to figure out exactly how much they want to lean on the individual talents of Aldridge and Leonard, and how far acro s the spectrum they really want to move towardisolations and post-ups. Those actions can also be powerful levers for creating the kinds of open layups and 3-pointers their offense has focused on. It will just take some time to figure out how to layer the nece sary movement and counters on top of the somewhat more static openings. There is almost certainly a happy medium out there somewhere, but they haven't found it yet.
