Tang Wei is the only child of a former stage actress and painter. She grew up traveling around China and learning to paint from her parents. She graduated from the Central Academy of Drama where she majored in directing. She made her film debut in 1998 with the TV series Chinese Female Football.

She gained international recognition for her role as Wong Chia Chi / Mrs. Mak in Lust, Caution (2007), a historical drama set during World War II. The film was directed by Zhang Yimou and co-starred Tony Leung Ka-fai and Zhang Ziyi.
